The ring road of Opoczno is a modern single carriageway with three lanes in the 2+1 combination. This solution enables safe and facilitated travelling. The route whose main aim is to lead the transit out of the national road no. 12 has been adapted to carry the greatest loads, i.e. cars with the load up to 11.5 tones per axle. The new route is 7.8 kilometer - long. Three lanes allow for safe overtaking, which was impossible in the city center, thus radically reducing the travel time.
The entry to the Opoczno center and the voivodeship road no. 713 towards Tomaszów Mazowiecki is ensured by two modern, collision-free junctions.
In order for the new route to be constructed, it was necessary to build eight engineering facilities, six viaducts and two bridges on the river Wąglanka and Drzewicka. It should be noted that the second bridge towering over the area in a characteristic blue color is the longest single-span bridge in Poland! The span is over 130 meters long.
Numerous sections of the new route lead through high embankments, the construction of which required approximately 2 million tones of sand and aggregate. To carry this amount of material, nearly 70 thousand four-axis dump trucks are needed. Such amount of cars set in a row would create a queue to Gdańsk and back. The Contractor also put more than 100 thousand tones of bituminous mass and set nearly a half thousand road signs.
However, the works have not been limited to such spectacular actions. In order for the road to meet current road standards and have adequate durability, it was necessary to establish, among others, road drainage and lighting of road junctions. A challenge for designers and builders was the passage under the Central Railway Main Line. Barriers protecting drivers travelling on the ring road are nearly 22 kilometer - long.
The construction works were accompanied by a great concern for the natural environment. Numerous partitions and passes aimed at protecting small animals and enabling them to migrate safely during mating season were created. The total length of nets to prevent amphibians from entering the road amounts to nearly 9 kilometers. Sound-absorbing screens with the surface of almost 10 thousand square meters will provide comfort of local residents. The screens have been mounted on 3.5 kilometers at the new road.
The construction works carried out by Strabag were commenced in the half of 2010 and were completed on the last day of 2011. Their cost amounted to approximately PLN 150 million.
